Binaural beat technology is an attempt to manipulate the human EEG by suggesting an EEG (Electroencephalography) frequency to the mind. The EEG frequency is the brains own electrical signal. It shows up when we attach electrodes to a human brain. The EEG frequency range is from about 0.5 hz to 30 hz depending on the state of mind a person is in. For thought purposes, this continuum has been divided up into four distinct states. They are as follows: |
|
State Name |
Frequency Range
|
State of mind |
|
Delta |
0.5Hz - 4Hz |
Deep sleep |
|
Theta |
4Hz - 8Hz |
Drowsiness (also first stage of sleep) |
|
Alpha |
8Hz - 14Hz |
Relaxed but alert |
|
Beta |
14Hz - 30Hz |
Highly alert and focused |
Keep in mind that the EEG is actually somewhat broad spectrum, and that the subject at hand references mainly the EEG frequency range that dominates.

TGen can play binaural beat programs while your computer plays your favorite music at the same time! This can make your session more enjoyable and/or effective! TGen can perform up to 15 tones simultaneously with your choice of waveform, frequency and amplitude sweeps. You can build tone programs that play up to 20 tone definitions sequentially for each of the 15 voices. Each tone can be played on the right, left, or both channels. TGen is ideal for building your own binaural beat programs. Binaural programs are intended to be used with headphones. Preferably headphones that can deliver good low frequency response and are comfortable to wear. |
If we have two tuning forks next to each other that are designed for the same frequency, we
Can make one of them vibrate by tapping on the other. This is really no different than tuning
In your radio. When we set our radio to a particular frequency, it develops a sympathetic vibration
with the radio station. Objects tuned to the same frequency simply respond to each other because
their influence on each other builds over time even if that influence is small by nature.
Because the human brain can operate on many frequencies, physics insists that it has the potential to develop sympathetic vibrations with many frequencies. Thinkably, any occurrence that stimulates the mind with a given frequency could influence the mind to alter its state and begin to sympathetically vibrate at that frequency. Common music timing is a prime example, especially if the music carries a pronounced rhythm, beat or timing. Everyone knows that music influences the way that they feel. However, with binaural beat stimulation, we are not so much attempting to stir the emotions as to reach down a little deeper into the human mind and directly manipulate our state of mind.
It is assumable that sympathetically stimulating the mind will work best if we stimulate it with a
Frequency that is close to the range it is currently operating on. This promotes the idea of starting a session of stimulation somewhere near where we think the mind is at, and slowly leading it to where we would like it to go. Some have named the following act of the mind the “frequency following response”. Leading the mind to achieve a particular frequency range may be called “entrainment”.
We can make this happen simply by generating frequency sweeps that start where we think the mind is and end where we want it to go. My personal experience is that it takes approx. 5 to 15 minutes to achieve a significant change in a state of mind.
I have argued in the past that stimulation frequencies do not necessarily need to be binaural. Binaural beats are interference patterns that the mind senses when we put one frequency in one ear and a nearby frequency in the other ear. Binaural beats have become popular. They sound really scientific. And best of all, many people have spent time investigating them. They are an easy way of achieving the goal that has won many peoples confidence.
If the left ear is presented with a steady tone of 400Hz and the right ear a steady tone of 410Hz, these two tones combine in the brain. The difference, 10Hz, is perceived by the brain and is a stimulus that can cause the brain to begin to sympathize or entrain. As it goes, the ears can hardly hear real frequencies (i.e. not beats caused by interference) that are in the EEG range. This means that only beat frequencies can be used.
Of course, beats being the difference between two frequencies allows us to use any audible base frequency and a complimentary frequency for the other ear that is the desired beat frequency in hz different from the base frequency.

What someone likes the best is unquestionably a personal preference issue. This is a strong argument by the way for purchasing your own frequency generator program as opposed to purchasing CDs that contain prerecorded entrainment sessions. |
The common claim as to how the mind senses binaural beats is that the mind is pre-disposed to notice phase differences between the ears in order to extract directional information out of the data. Considering that neural response time is generally categorized in the 1-millisecond range, this idea would preclude the effectiveness of this type of sensing for frequencies at or above approximately 1 thousand hertz simply because the phase information is happening faster than neurons can fire. In fact, it would suggest that frequencies well below 1000 hz should be used.
It is also commonly suggested that passive listening to binaural beats may not achieve maximum effect. Willingness, ability, and concentration effort may also be necessary.
The following paragraphs describe some things that can be achieved.
The theta stage (4hz - 7Hz) is known to improve learning. Alpha frequencies are also valuable for learning purposes. Entrainment during learning experiences might be as simple as reading while listening to entrainment frequencies.
Meditation is commonly considered to be the willful manipulation of ones state of mind. Meditators in the past have required several years in training to learn the techniques of meditation. Binaural beat stimulation bypasses much of that training and allows similar effects with brainwave entrainment. Meditation frequencies are commonly in the alpha range, from 8Hz to 13Hz. Lower frequencies are often considered as requiring much practice. Multiple simultaneous frequencies are also commonly used. It is claimed that the mind can learn meditation states through repetition.
Some organizations seek to train meditation states into people by repeating them daily. A person may begin such a program by practicing entrainment to a medium frequency like 8 Hz for half an hour a day for several months. That person may then move down the scale a few Hz, a few months at a time.
If you are interested in using TGen as a meditation aid, it is highly advisable to connect yourself with people who are experienced at meditation. A local yoga organization, or a network news group could be very helpful. Try alt.meditation, alt.meditation.qigong, alt.meditation.quanyin, alt.meditation.shabda, and alt.meditation.transcendental .
The following URL contains information about free news servers if your service provider does not offer a network news service. http://www.arcwebserv.com/jumpsite/usenet.html Just clicking on one of their links will make outlook express attempt to connect to the respective news server. Many of the servers do not work.
Also try http://www.yottanews.com/. If you are using outlook express, to add a news server to your mail program, first click on the Outlook express icon upper left of the client areas. Then, on the middle right of the mail browser you will see “Set up a newsgroups account”. Click on that. An alternate route is to click on the menu item tools/accounts then add and news. Enter your name and the name of the network news server as required. Download a list of newsgroups (this will happen almost automatically) and search the list for the word meditation. Several meditation groups will appear, including alt.meditation .

If you are seriously interested in meditation, get involved with a meditation group. This is very important, since meditation is a complex undertaking usually requiring training. Local yogis or network news groups are indispensable! Many people will be happy to help you learn the ropes!! |
It has been found that brain cells reset their potassium and sodium concentrations when the brain is in the Theta state. These ion levels are directly related to a neurons ability to send signals. In fact, neural signals passing along a neuron are essentially an interplay of sodium and potassium ions. After a long period of time in the Beta state, neurons begin to lose their control over these ion concentrations. This results in mental fatigue. A short time in Theta (about 5 - 15min) can restore the proper ion concentrations, refreshing the mind. Some people have been able to achieve the benefits of several hours of sleep in under an hour this way.
Brainwave entrainment has also been found useful in reducing headaches and migraines.
Binaural beats are used in treatment of low self-esteem, depression, attention deficit disorder, and autism. Perhaps there are methods that have been devised for something that is important to you.
Binaural beats are commonly embedded in music or combined with fractal noises. Many more claims have been made as to what can be achieved. Enhanced creativity and intuition, telepathy, remote viewing, out-of-body experience and lucid dreaming are among such effects.
